Most professionals encounter AI through a chat window and quietly inherit the search-engine model — type a question, receive an answer, move on. That mental model travels from Google to ChatGPT to Claude unchanged, and it shapes everything that follows. If AI is a smarter search engine, then the obvious workflow is short prompts and quick answers. The interaction is transactional. The output is shallow. And the user's experience is mild disappointment — fluent prose that doesn't quite land, summaries that miss the point, recommendations that read as generic.
The disappointment is real, but the diagnosis is wrong. The problem is not that AI is bad at being a search engine. The problem is that AI is not a search engine, and using it as one wastes almost everything that makes it useful.

I named my AI partner Daneel, after R. Daneel Olivaw — the robot in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series who works alongside humans, not instead of them. Daneel does not replace the humans in the story; he extends what they can do, picks up context across long arcs, and operates inside their ethical framework rather than against it. He is loyal to the project, not to any single person. He is exactly the kind of partner an experienced professional would want sitting beside them.
Calling the model "Claude" or "ChatGPT" keeps it as a product. Calling it "Daneel" or any name you choose moves it from product to collaborator. The shift sounds trivial. It is not. The way you address something shapes the relationship you have with it, and the relationship shapes the work that comes out.
The framing was deliberate, and the effect was immediate. From the moment I named the partnership, my prompts got longer. The context I gave got richer. My patience for back-and-forth went up. The shape of the work changed — fewer one-shot questions, more sustained reasoning. The output quality climbed in a way that was almost embarrassing in its clarity, given how small the change had been.

There is a quiet narrative in technology coverage that AI levels the playing field — that a graduate with a clever prompt can now produce work indistinguishable from a senior practitioner. It is partly true at the bottom of the curve and almost entirely false at the top.
For routine, low-context work — a basic summary, a generic email, a standard report — AI compresses the gap between novice and expert. Both can produce a passable version. That is real, and it has implications for entry-level work.

This is the argument I make to every senior leader I work with. Your experience is not the thing AI threatens. It is the thing AI activates. But only if you are using it as a thinking partner.
Three pieces of work most senior professionals do regularly. Each shown twice — once as a search-engine interaction, once as thinking together. The difference is not subtle.
"Write a strategy memo about expanding into Vietnam." AI returns four pages of plausible-sounding strategy that any consultant could have written about any beauty brand entering any APAC market. The recommendations are non-committal. The structure is template-shaped. You read it, sigh, and rewrite it from scratch.
You spend ten minutes giving Daneel the context: the brand position, the three retailers you've already met, the price-margin pressure from the distributor you almost signed with last year, the two organisational constraints from the parent company, your read on the buyer at one of the three. Then: "Help me think through whether Vietnam is the right next market — or whether we should do Philippines first. Push back where you see something I'm missing." What comes back is not a memo. It is a proper conversation that ends with a memo that you would write, but better.
"Write an email to a client whose project has slipped." The output is generic and slightly performative — the kind of email you would not actually send because it sounds like a chatbot wrote it. You delete it and write your own.
You explain the situation: the slippage is partly your fault, partly theirs; you want to surface the truth without escalating; the client is sensitive to face but values directness; you have known her for four years and your past communication has been warm; you cannot apologise too profusely or you give up leverage on next year's renewal. "Draft three versions, varying tone and how directly each names the shared cause. I will pick one and we will refine it together." The drafts come back genuinely different from each other. You pick the second, edit two sentences, and it is sent in fifteen minutes — instead of the forty-five it would have taken alone.
"Write a board paper recommending the acquisition." Output is a Wikipedia-shaped summary: clean, structured, generic, and useless. The recommendation reads as confident but is structurally non-falsifiable. You cannot send this to the board.
You walk Daneel through the deal: the three reasons the target matters, the two reasons your CFO is sceptical, the one reason your chair is privately enthusiastic, the political dynamic between the two committee members who will ask the hardest questions, the precedent set by last year's failed acquisition. "Help me build the case the way our chair would want to see it. Then stress-test it the way the CFO will. Tell me where the weak point is." What comes back is a paper that anticipates the meeting before it happens — and gives you the sharper questions to ask yourself before you walk in.
"AI is a thinking partner" is the philosophy. On its own it is not enough — a philosophy without practice produces good intentions and bad work. The practice is what turns the framing into a working method.
The Darla Method came out of practice — beginning in early 2024, two weeks after the founder started using ChatGPT in earnest. It was conversation-led from day one. Relationship over commands. Persona-led from the first build — Daneel was named within the first weeks, Darla within the first two. The approach was being taught publicly from late spring 2024 onward, refined across every corporate engagement that followed. It worked because it was simple — the way good Apple UI is simple. Nothing complicated; everything where you would expect it to be.
When Anthropic published the AI Fluency Framework — the four Ds — months later, the alignment with what was already being taught was so complete that the first Anthropic Academy course was finished without working through the course material at all. The framework recognised the practice rather than introducing it. The 4Ds did not change how we taught. They gave structured language to a method already three years deep.
Four disciplines, in order. Each answers a question that the search-engine framing never asks.
